Glossary

We know we use lots of words that make absolutely no sense to most people. We don’t mean to. We hope that providing you with the definitions of some of the most common decorating, marketing, and industry terms will help you make better decisions. You can always call us if you have any questions about our lingo!

A

Ad Copy
Ad copy, or advertising copy, refers to the words or text chosen to be imprinted on an item. This can include stuff like the company’s name, their tagline, and/or their sales message.
Anti-Pilling
Anti-pilling is a unique treatment applied to apparel that helps garments resist the formation of the little balls, or “pills”, on the surface usually caused by abrasion during wear.
Artwork
Artwork refers to the logos, photos, illustrations and/or lettering you submit for imprinting on an item. Artwork files are usually created in programs like Adobe® Photoshop, Adobe® Illustrator, Quark®, and Corel Draw®.
Awareness
Awareness is the percentage of the population or target market that is aware of your Company or brand. Customized promotional products help promote awareness and can increase the probability that your customers will recall your Company when it counts.


B

Back Pleats
Back pleats are the small folds in the fabric on the back of a shirt that allow for more space and comfort.
Bleed
A bleed is when the artwork goes all the way to the edge of a page. You have to print off the page in order for it to cover the edges.
Blind Debossing
Blind debossing is a decoration method whereby an image is pressed into a sheet without ink or foil, creating a lowered area.
Boldface
Boldface, or bold type, is a heavy or thick typeface that is used for emphasis. Boldface type is usually used for titles in ad copy.
Box Pleat
A box pleat is a single, even fold in the back center of a shirt that allows for more space and comfort.
Brand
A brand is a set of promises about a Company’s products or services. It is the combination of a Company’s name, words, and symbols that distinguished it from competing products. Companies that have been successful with their brand include Apple®, Nike®, and Coca-Cola®. Promotional products can help you establish relationships between your customers and your brand.
Brand Asset Management
Brand asset management is a strategic approach to building the meaning of a brand. It addresses how the brand will be communicated both to its customers and to its employees. Promotional products and giveaways can be used to boost brand value, brand profitability, and brand returns.
Branding
When used in a marketing sense, branding is the use of logos, symbols, or product designs to promote consumer awareness of goods and services. It is the sum total of a company’s value, including products, services, people, advertising, positioning, and culture. Branding Iron Studios can help you with your branding efforts. It uses a hot iron to burn an imprint into leather and wood products.


C

Camera-ready Art
Any drawing, photo, illustration or lettering suitable for photographic reproduction. Camera-ready art can be supplied in hard copy.
Chambray
Chambray is a dressier fabric woven with colored and white yarns. It is often used for professional-looking men's dress shirts.
CMYK
CMYK refers to the printing inks used in four-color process printing. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black are the only four colors used to produce full-color photographs and designs. These colors can be combined and printed to emulate a wide number of other colors.
Color Fill Deboss
A two-step process combining the deboss process and filling the die struck image with foil or color. Used on leather and leatherette products for a 3D look with color.
Color Separations
The separation of multi-colored original art by camera or laser-scan techniques to produce individual separated colors. There are four common separations: yellow, magenta, cyan and black.
Combed Cotton
Cotton fiber that has been through a mechanical process that removes the short fibers and impurities, strengthening and aligning the fibers.
Compaction
A technique used to control shrinkage in fabric during the manufacturing process.
Contoured Collar
A sport shirt collar construction in which the back portion of the collar is wider than the front tips. This assembly helps to cover the back neck seam.
Cord Locks
A toggle or stopper on a drawcord that keeps it from drawing back into the garment.
Continuous Tone Art
Photograph, painting or other pieces of art in which black & white tones gradually merge into one another.
Crop
To eliminate a portion of a picture, illustration or photograph that contains unnecessary material or to highlight a certain area of the image.
Custom Crafted Medallion
Typically used on coasters, awards, and clocks, custom crafted medallions add an elegant touch to your promotional product. They are cast in metal molds/dies and show amazing detail and quality.


D

Deboss
In debossing, a design is heat-pressed into the surface of the product with a die, creating a depression. Debossing can enhance the appearance of your promotional products by adding a 3D effect. Used on leather and leatherette products.
Decal
Artwork is produced on a transparent decal and then the decal is applied to the promotional product.
Deep Etch
Deep etch is our highest caliber etching technique rendering a crisply detailed and permanent dimensional image. Deep etch is the technique of choice to add that “wow” factor for prestigious presentations. Deep etch with colorfill adds another dimension by adding depth to the etching.
Die Struck
A reverse die is made of the imprint, then machine struck onto the metal surface. Die struck pieces are predominantly metal (lapel pins, etc.) and may be color filled.
Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printing
DTG printing is when a large format inkjet printer is used to print a design directly onto a garment. This decoration method is very smooth to the touch since the inks are absorbed directly into the fabric.DTG is optimal for small quantities.
DPI
DPI stands for dots per inch. Also referred to as pixels per inch. When referencing bitmap images, this is the number of individual elements of color information per inch.
Double Needle Stitch
A finish used on a bottom hem and/or sleeve that uses two needles to create parallel rows of noticeable stitching. Double-needle stitch gives wearables and totes a cleaner, more finished look, as well as adding durability.
Drop Tail
A characteristic design feature in which a dress shirt is shorter in the front and longer in the back.


E

Emboss
Embossing is a technique which raises flat surfaces into raised, 3D patterns. Embossing provides dimension to designs on promotional products.
Embroidery
Embroidery is a decoration method where colored threads are sewn onto fabric to create a design. Embroidery provides a very professional look for your promotional products, especially wearables. Embroidery is more expensive than screenprinting or direct-to-garment printing, but is a very impressive way to show off your design. Stitch count is calculated by the size and intricacy of your logo.
Enzyme Washed
For wearable products, enzyme washed is a laundering process where a catalytic substance is added to the wash to produce a transformation in the fabric resulting in an extremely soft finish, a smoother appearing surface, and reduced shrinkage.
Epoxy Domes
Epoxy domes add dimension and shine to your logo by placing it under a clear, high-gloss polyurethane dome.
EPS File
EPS stands for Encapsulated Postscript, which is a file format for capturing precise image and text information. EPS files use a mathematical basis for building an image and are the most reliable method for communicating artwork for your promotional products.
Engraving
Engraving is a decorating method used for transferring a design to hard, smooth material such as metal and wood. The engraving is done by cutting into the material. With wood products, this process leaves the natural color of the wood to bring the design to life.
Etching
Etching is usually the preferred imprint method for glass and crystal honor awards and employee incentive and service awards. Etching ranges from light etch, to deep etch, to sandblasting. The difference is how deep the etching is in the surface.


F

Fleece
Fleece is a type of apparel that uses a multi-yarn fabric characterized by a soft napped interior and a smooth exterior.
Foil Stamped or Hotstamped with Foil
Foil stamp is a decoration method where heat is used to leave a foil imprint of a design on a surface. Foil stamps are available in many colors, but are limited to one color for an entire design.
Four Color Process
Four color process, or process color, is a printing process where you begin with finished full-color artwork and separate out the artwork into CMYK format – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. When four color process printing is done with care, the end result looks fantastic. With just four colors you can get an entire spectrum of colors to match the original artwork very closely and very economically.
Font
A font is the complete typeset you want to use from a particular typeface. Examples of popular fonts include Helvetica, Times New Roman, and Arial.


G

Generic Brand
A generic brand is a product not associated with a private or national brand name.
GIF
A .GIF is a Graphics Interchange File and is one of the most popular types of bitmap image formats. However, while GIF images are great for the web, they do not always provide a high enough resolution, or clarity, for your promotional products.


H

Halftone
An image produced by breaking the subject into small dots of varying intensities of gray ranging from white to black.
Hand Painted
Hand-painted products are personalized one at a time delivering exceptionally unique results.
Heat Stamping or Hot stamping
Heat stamping, or hot stamping, is a decoration process in which an engraved image mold, or hot stamping die, is heated then forced down against a product with a colored marking foil sandwiched in between. The area where the die-cast mold meets the product is where the ink from the foil is left behind. Hot stamping is used on many types of different materials, most commonly plastic and wood.
Herringbone
A wearable option, herringbone is a decorative fabric pattern made up of rows of tiny slanted parallel lines alternating direction each row. It provides a very professional look for your wearable promotional products.

Ink Process
A direct ink method typically applied to plastic bags. This is usually an optional imprint opportunity for the outer packaging of the promotional item you are purchasing.
Integrated Marketing Communications
IMC is a management concept that is designed to make all aspects of marketing communication such as advertising, sales promotion, public relations, and direct marketing work together as a unified force, rather than permitting each to work in isolation. Promotional products are a great way to improve the cohesiveness of your IMC.
Internal Marketing
Internal marketing is an ongoing process that occurs when a company or organization focuses on training, motivating, and empowering employees at all management levels to consistently deliver a satisfying customer experience. Promotional products are a great way to support internal marketing efforts and reinforce team unity.

JPG / JPEG File
JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. A .JPEG, or .jpg, is one of the most popular types of bitmap image formats.JPG images support 16 million colors and are commonly used for saving images and photographs.

Key Success Factors
Key success factors are the factors that are a necessary condition for success in a given market. You can use promotional products to reinforce your key success factors by building awareness and keeping your marketing message in front of your customers.

Laser Engraving
Laser engraving is a decoration method for promotional products.A machine uses light to burn an image into a substrate. Laser engraving is primarily used for metal, wood, and glass products.
Laser Etching
Laser etching is a decoration method whereby a machine uses light to burn an image into a substrate. Laser engraving is primarily used for metal, wood, and glass products.
Lasered Leather
Lasered leather is a decoration method whereby a machine uses light to burn an image into leather. It can be used for the most intricate designs with very crisp results.
Line Art
Line art, or camera-ready art, is artwork composed of black and white illustration of reproduction quality.
Logo
A logo is the design element used to brand a company. It is a combination of graphic elements, symbols, or icons of a brand and its logotype arranged in a certain way to prompt immediate brand recognition. Logos are usually designed to represent a product, service, or organization. The shapes, colors, fonts, and images are usually different from others in the same market.
Logotype
A unique and/or custom font used in conjunction with a product, service, or company's brand logo. Branding Iron Studios may be able to use your logotype on a promotional product if you are able to supply it to us.


M

Micro-Fleece
Micro-fleece is a high density, anti-pilling fleece made of knit microfibers that are brushed less than a regular fleece garment. It has a high capacity for warmth without the weight.
Microfiber
Fabric that is tightly woven from an extremely fine poly thread with a suede-like finish for a luxurious, supple feel. Microfiber tends to be water resistant due to its construction and special treatments.
Milling
Milling is the process of cutting a place to embed a medallion on a product. Milling charges usually apply when applying optional medallions to wood products, such as wood clocks.


N

Nylon
Nylon is a man-made yarn generally used in jacket manufacturing, with the unique features of flexibility, strength, and abrasion resistance.


O

Offset Printing or Offset Lithography
Offset printing is a process of transferring ink from a metal printing plate to a rubber-covered cylinder. It is used on more complex artwork and for higher quantity runs.
Over-run
An over-run is the number of products in excess of the number originally ordered. Due to the nature of the printing methods used to economically produce custom imprinted products in bulk, there will occasionally be over-runs and under-runs. The industry standard on most products is ± 5%. Branding Iron Studios will charge for the exact quantity shipped.


P

Pantone Matching System (PMS)
PMS is a color scale used to precisely match colors for printing. Each color has a coded number indicating instructions for mixing inks to achieve it.PMS matching is done for an additional fee since the colors have to be hand-mixed.
Pad Print
Pad printing is a printing process that can transfer a 2-D image onto a 3-D object. It is an effective method of decorating oddly shaped promotional products since the pad can wrap as much as 180 degrees and ink coverage is excellent. One color is done at a time and registration between colors is adequate for four-color process printing. Stressballs use the pad printing process.
Pilling
Pilling is a friction induced collection of fibers on the surface of a garment characterized by small lint balls.
Poly-filled
A warm polyester lining found in the sleeves or body (or both) in many outerwear garments.
Polynosic
A fabric with similar characteristics to cotton and silk that has outstanding luster and minimal shrinkage.

Silkscreen or Screenprinting
Silkscreen, or screenprinting, is a decoration method for promotional products whereby ink is pressed thru a fine screen leaving a flat, painted imprint on the surface of the material. Each color is done individually. Screenprinting offers great results and is a good value for large quantities.
Screen Print Medallion
A screen print medallion is a metal medallion with your logo printed onto the surface of the medallion.
SpectraColor
This 4-color process application will reproduce your full-color artwork, photo or logo design using CMYK printing. SpectraColor® allows you to reproduce your full-color design or logo by scanning a flat, full-color image or printing your computer-generated art.
Spin Cast Medallion
Medallions cast in metal molds show amazing detail and quality. Spin Cast Medallions use disposable molds offering good quality on lower quantity orders.
Spot Color
Spot color is when a single consistent color is used throughout an area.
Sublimation
Sublimation is a heat transfer method of imprint using heat-activated dyes that "sublimate" into the fabric; becoming part of the fabric, rather than an imprint sitting on top of the fabric.


T

Target Market
The target market is the group of buyers considered most likely to purchase a particular product. Marketing and advertising efforts for any given product are directed toward this group.
Thermal Printing
Thermal printing produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermo paper when the paper passes over the thermal print head. It is an economical way to put your logo or message on small quantities, but limited in color (usually only black and one additional color).
TIFF File
TIFF stands for Tagged Image File Format. This is a bitmap file format.
Typeface
A general term used to describe the styles of lettering available in typesetting. Typeface is the same as font.
Typography
Typography is the art of selecting, and arranging, type for brand marketing communications.


U

Under-Run
An under-run is a condition where fewer products are produced than had been ordered. Due to the nature of the printing methods used to economically produce custom imprinted products in bulk, there will occasionally be over-runs and under-runs. The industry standard on most products is ± 5%. Our customers will only be charged for the exact quantity shipped.
Underarm Grommets
Small holes in the underarm area of a garment that allow air circulation and breathability for the wearer.

A zipper involving two zipper pulls that enable it to be unzipped from either direction.A nice option on quality garments.
